In this climate of Hate, runaway climate change, Ohio “pro-life” legislators proposing death to those seeking abortion, and fox news reporting on their annual x-mas war, what is the churches position on Abortion? A church is a reflection of its congregation and because we are a group that celebrates diversity of culture and beliefs, I cannot answer this for everyone who walks on our path. I will attempt to answer the question on behalf of those that founded it and our interpretation of The fifth principle of Deep Ecology as it relates to this question “ The flourishing of human life and cultures is compatible with a substantial decrease of the human population. The flourishing of nonhuman life requires such a decrease.” Human population has almost doubled* since deep ecology was first presented. Personal choices do matter, especially in the first world where consumption and mass consumerism are the most rampant. We, as a species, are facing the real possibility that children born today may not live in a biosphere our species has ever encountered. Through our actions we are destroying the biodiversity of the planet. The Church of Deep Ecology Officially Supports an individuals right to choice. We believe in full access to reproductive education, health services and birth control. This includes access to safe methods of terminating a pregnancy. Limiting Abortion, birth control, and basic sexual education has been, and is, used as a means of control and subjugation. We reject the simplistic, unscientific and often overly emotional argument that life begins at a heartbeat. We see, in the pronouncement of death, a more logical metric to consult for when human life begins. Medical death occurs when regular brain activity stops. In a fetus regular brain activity begins at approximately 25 weeks. Abortions after 24 weeks account for roughly 1% of all abortions and are typically performed when there is a medical necessity to save the mother life or prevent a fetus from being born to a short and painful death. We fully condone methods that safely terminate pregnancy in any case where the mother deems it necessary for their health or welfare. We recognize the decision to terminate or continue a pregnancy as a difficult and deeply personal one. We also recognize that the 5th principle has been used by some to demonize people with limited reproductive choices, often of different cultures or class, potentially wrapping their own racism and bigotry in a cloak of Deep Ecology. We have no tolerance for racism or bigotry, our focus should be on defending sexual education and reproductive choices not falling into the trap of dividing ourselves based on the child and childless. *Source: U.S. Census Bureau, International Database.

What is the best way to celebrate a holiday that celebrates death, colonialism and the runaway consumerism of western culture? The 8th principle of Deep Ecology tells us once we recognize there are problems we have an obligation directly or indirectly to participate in the attempt to implement the necessary changes. I interpret this as a need to gain or share the practical skills necessary to win. It is not enough to ask politicians and corporations to destroy less wilderness. We need to preserve it all, to recreate lost habitats and reintroduce extirpated predators. We need to stop and reverse the poisoning of our air, water and soil, as well as the modification of life’s genetic code. Don’t like Nazi’s? learn how to fight them, Feel passionate about whaling or the destruction of ocean life? Why aren’t you sailing the high seas or helping fund those who do? Habitat Protection? Likes and shares are not enough. We need to develop our skills and activist tool box so we can realize victory for ourselves, the ecosystem and all life on this planet.

Thanks to all who braved the rain to circle around the fire and celebrate nature and the full moon
On June 2nd 2018,
We had the honor of officiating the first Hand fasting for the Church of Deep Ecology. May the happy couple have a long and active life together.
